Some recommendations for an early exposure to music

Actualizado: 8 sept 2020

All scientists agree on one thing: music has benefits for the brains of all human beings. SPECIALLY in children's brains. The earlier, the better.

You can make it happen: expose your child to music from the very first day. Singing, clapping, dancing, jumping, humming, banging an old pan or pot... You don't need to get a bunch of stuff (most of us, actually we have way too many things at home, and babies have way too many toys to play with! Use some of them for the musical input purposes! Or you can also make some "homemade" musical instruments, or get some inspiration in Pinterest).

Here you have another idea to build your own guitar. Or here.

What could help is setting a "music corner", a space reserve for the joy of making music :) Also, you can set apart a box with a microphone, some puppets, a few hats, some scarfs, a crown, etc. if you'd like to make a performance once in a while. It will be fun! The more variety, the more you'll get your kid engage into the activity.

What can make the difference? It is that, on a regular basis, your baby gets the opportunity to make music. 0-2 years old babies/toddlers need at least one adult offering the musical experiences: listening to music, singing together, clapping and dancing games, etc.

At home, you can reserve an hour (even less) everyday for "music time", it will be fun to have that moment, I can assure you, they will treasure it! Let your kid have some shakers (you can even make them), a tambourine, some bells, a whistle, a toy guitar, a little drum...

You can listen to a new song, you can sing and dance, you can sing and clap, you can make up your own lyrics... If you can't make it happen everyday, try to set a couple days/week and stick to the plan (routines help them too).

Out of your home: join group classes, attend to playgroups... (I am speaking about Madrid, which is the city where I live). I know there are some concerts for children once in a while, you just have to look for the info!

From 2-3 years old, some of them might be able to start formal instruction. BUT, by "formal" I don't mean "boring and serious" lessons... If you think it is still too soon to start with an instrument, keep doing "music-time" at home, and keep providing musical inputs to your child. Every tiny activity counts! From 3-7 years old the best way to get them engage into learning how to play an instrument (and any other kind of activity) is making it attractive, and it is possible, with the right tools.

After 7-8 years old, kids are totally different students regarding their own skills, that means, teaching that ages pupils needs a different approach.

Early exposure to music is not easy, but is not impossible. If you believe that music is important for our daily life, and you would like your child to develop his potential, this is the right place for you!

My posts in English are a bit shorter than the related one in Spanish, since it is not my mother tongue, and I lack of a wider variety of expressions (also I apologize for my mistakes). If your Spanish is good enough, please try to read that one and I hope that, reading both posts, you can get an idea about what I am trying to share here.

Of course, you can also ask me: I'll do my best to answer you.

Thanks for following!
